Buccaneer Beach Bar Goes Green
Jill and Bermard. owners of the popular Buccaneer Beach Bar on Kim Sha Beach, have taken a determined stand agaist plastic pollution on St Maarten by serving their drinks in eco-friendly 16 oz cups. These striking custom-printed cups are made from 100% cornstarch and, although they look like plastic, they are totally biodegradable and do not harm the environment - unlike plastic.
Not only that, the Buccaneer Bar is one of the first bars anywhere in the world to offer their diners cutlery packs made entirely from plants! These innovative packs consist of a biodegradable knife and fork along with a bagasse (sugar cane) napkin. Even the bag they're packaged in is made from a recently developed substance called bio-starch material. This means that after use, when the packs and their contents are thrown into the landfill, they simply degrade to harmless plant matter after a few months.
Working in association with Good2Go, Jill and Bernard have been instrumental in developing these customized cutlery sets and importing them from manufacturers in the Far East. And, as a result of all their hard work, the Buccaneer Bar becomes one of the first recipients of a 2011 'Green Turtle' environmental award, an honour given to all businesses on St Maarten who take major steps to reduce their impact on our island's precious environment.

No More Throw-away Plastic
Good2Go is a company of like-minded individuals, based on St Martin in the Caribbean and the only specialist supplier of sustainable packaging and disposable tableware in the region.
What unites this small, energetic team is a heartfelt commitment to ridding the islands of single-use plastic products and replacing them with innovative and practical alternatives; products made from corn, sugar cane, bamboo and palm leaves, all of which break down in our natural environment.
The people at Good2Go, like many others in the region, are thoroughly sick of seeing the shameful tide of plastic that is sweeping through their beautiful islands, ruining the oceans and beaches and killing wildlife.
Good2Go believes that the harmful effects of plastic pollution in the environment cannot be overstated and they are determined to rid the Caribbean of throw-away plastic products; from packaging, food containers and beverage bottles, through to bags, cups, plates, trays and cutlery.
Thankfully, many enlightened Caribbean businesses, and some government departments, are working with Good2Go to move away from ‘nasty plastic’. It’s comforting to know that in this plastic-filled world, people everywhere are turning to biodegradable alternatives and becoming more aware of how an individual’s action, no matter how small, really can make a contribution to the environment.
